My True Identity

As a Puerto Rican, it's hard to describe yourself because we are a mix of different cultures. Some people consider us Hispanics while others think we are just another state. Who do we really are? I often find myself asking this and I know I'm not the only one.

I've always been this quiet girl who likes to imagine, learn and explore. As a kid, I enjoyed running into the wild, taking care of my aunt's goats, writing short stories, eating Mofongo and giving "Parrandas" during Christmas time. But as I grew up, it was hard to find myself. Having a lot of people tell me what I should do or how I should behave. I never took into account what I had to say until, one day, I understood that it was all those little things I did and enjoyed that made me who I am.

Even if some people may think Puerto Ricans actually don't have a true identity, I know I have a personality. I celebrate Santa Claus and The Three Kings. I have my own type of language: a mixture of Spanish and Anglicisms with a Boricua accent, I like both types of football, I hear pop music and dance salsa with flavor, I love hamburgers, but not as much as my "arroz con gandules". All this habits and traditions have formed my identity and culture.

My Hispanic heritage and Puerto Rican roots will always influence me because it's part of who I am. All those habits and traditions here on my island, my love for writing and desire to learn has defined my personality. I want my stories to reach the whole world and be known for that uncommon mix of styles, because that mix is my true nature.
